Godfrey Johnson School of Theatre & Performing Arts

Godfrey Johnson is an award-winning performer whose career has been built on remarkable versatility, passion and years of experience in the arts. As a pianist, singer, actor, composer, arranger and director, he has performed in and directed productions across the world, including in Edinburgh, Amsterdam, London and Montreal. His journey in theatre and performance has been shaped by a deep love for people, storytelling and the power of live entertainment.

Over the years, Godfrey has become known not only for his own performances, but also for his ability to inspire others. With a repertoire of more than 300 songs and characters, he has entertained audiences in a wide range of spaces — from theatres and festivals to corporate stages — working with leading organisations such as Nedbank, PEP, Old Mutual and even the South African government. He has also worked alongside some of the country’s most respected theatre legends and remains highly sought after as a composer, creative collaborator and mentor.

The Godfrey Johnson School of Theatre & Performing Arts is the natural expression of a lifetime spent in the industry. It is the result of years of experience, dedication and a heartfelt desire to leave something meaningful behind for the next generation of performers. More than just a school, it is a space where talent is nurtured, confidence is built, and excellence is encouraged.

At GJSTPA, creativity, discipline and performance meet in a practical and inspiring training environment. Students are equipped not only with performance skills, but also with the confidence, stage presence and professionalism needed to succeed in the real world.

Our vision is to play a meaningful role in strengthening South Africa’s social and economic future by creating genuine opportunities for young people through education and work in the arts, culture, hospitality and heritage sectors. We believe in building self-worth, encouraging excellence and developing young people who carry themselves with pride, purpose and integrity. The school embraces the spirit of Ubuntu and aims to grow leaders who value human dignity, uphold strong principles and become responsible, successful adults.

Our mission is to provide world-class performing arts education that serves as a platform for growth, transformation and opportunity. We are committed to shaping a new generation of creative thinkers, performers and industry leaders who will make their mark both in South Africa and beyond.
